Miss Knoxville – History

Back to Local Pageants

In the early days of the Miss America Organization, ‘key’ cities were allowed to send representatives to Atlantic City to compete directly for the title of Miss America.  These city titleholders were not required to compete in their respective states.  Knoxville, Tennessee was one of those ‘key’ cities.  For two consecutive years, 1940 and 1941, Miss Knoxville was a contestant in the Miss America Pageant.  Miss Knoxville1940 was 21 year old Thelma McGhee.  Miss Knoxville 1941 was a 20 year old, singer, Katherine Nadine Gammon.
